Weather Insight for Global Agriculture and Health Development

Interactive and accessible weather data form the foundation of agriculture and many health development investments. These initiatives require accurate and localized weather information. The aWhere Weather Application and aWhere’s WeatherTerrain™ data surfaces provide spatially specific (localized) estimates of key weather data...observed and forecast in an on-line, interactive weather analysis solution. These data prove essential for risk assessment activities, germplasm adoption efforts, vector-borne disease management, climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts, and food security monitoring.

Entire geographic areas interpolated to 9 km grids – aWhere provides daily generated, gridded weather surfaces, synthesized by interpolating observed data collected from 1000’s of meteorological stations. An advantage of gridded data is that the results include an ‘area’ value; with area, priorities can be set. In addition to historical daily weather and long term normal calculations, each day’s update to the weather surfaces includes current day and a 10 day forecast; the included weather variables are:

  • 1) Precipitation
  • 2) Min/Max Temperature
  • 3) Min/Max Relative Humidity
  • 4) Solar Radiation
  • 5) Max Wind Speed
  • 6) Morning Wind Speed
  • 7) Mean Temperature

Specific to agricultural initiatives, the aWhere weather solution provisions data for various online agronomic tools, and underpins automated reports and alerts. Examples of agronomic tools, which are all customizable to the specific needs of each customer/project, include:

  • Harvest prediction based on seasonal GDD accumulation, crop models are customizable to each customer's locations of analysis
  • Localized climate-smart recommendations that directly impact the individual farmer
  • Pest modeling from hourly forecast - conditions conducive for insect and fungal pests can be accurately, spatially predicted
  • Site Similarity - find geographic homologues, areas of similar growing period
  • Alert emails - sent if user selected threshold is crossed
  • Daily notifications - emailed location-specific daily weather reports
  • Drought and flood risk, monitoring, and short-term prediction
  • Food security predictions based on anticipated yields, population density, neighboring country situations and detailed precipitation
